What is a Function?
According to dictionary.com, a function is "the kind of action or activity proper to a person, thing, or institution. " In other words, it's...more or less something's purpose. The mathematical definition of a function is "a relation from a set of inputs to a set of possible outputs where each input is related to exactly one output.".
Ok, if that was slightly confusing, you can imagine a "function" as a machine in which, when it receives an input, emits an output, dependent on what the input was. A linear function is only able to be achieved when an input is put (see what I did there?) into this machine and an output, in the form of a line, is issued out of it.
Of course, functions can be classed into different categories, such as the linear, parabola, e.t.c.
